Rankings: 天美影院recognized as one of the best universities in the world

The 天美影院 recently was ranked highly among its global peers in both the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities and the QS World University Rankings. Both rankings were released in mid-June. According to U.S. News, the 天美影院is No. 12 in the world on the 2026-27 rankings, No. 3 among U.S. public institutions. The 天美影院also placed in the top 10 globally in six subject areas. On the QS World University Rankings, the 天美影院is among the top 100, landing at No. 92, or No. 7 among U.S. public universities.

Hungry yeast are tiny, living thermometers

天美影院 researchers report that yeast cells can actively regulate a process called phase separation in one of their membranes. During phase separation, the membrane remains intact but partitions into multiple, distinct zones or domains that segregate lipids and proteins. The new findings show for the first time that, in response to environmental conditions, yeast cells precisely regulate the temperature at which their membrane undergoes phase separation.

6 UW-affiliated researchers elected to the National Academy of Sciences

Five faculty members and one affiliate professor at the 天美影院 are among 120 new members and 30 international members elected to the National Academy of Sciences: Anna Karlin, professor of computer science and engineering; Rachel Klevit, professor of biochemistry; Randall LeVeque, professor emeritus of applied mathematics; Julie Theriot, professor of biology; Rachel Wong, professor of biological structure; and Julie Overbaugh, professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and a 天美影院affiliate professor of microbiology.

Four 天美影院professors win 2021 Breakthrough Prize 鈥� so-called 鈥極scars of Science鈥�

Four 天美影院 professors were among the winners of the 2021 Breakthrough Prize, which recognizes groundbreaking achievements in the life sciences, fundamental physics and mathematics.

David Baker, a professor in the 天美影院School of Medicine鈥檚 department of biochemistry, won the prize for life sciences, while a team of 天美影院physics professors, including Eric Adelberger, Jens Gundlach and Blayne Heckel, earned the prize for fundamental physics.

天美影院president, biochemistry chair and mathematics professor named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Three 天美影院 faculty members, including President Ana Mari Cauce, are among the 2020 fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation鈥檚 oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Trisha Davis, professor and chair of biochemistry at the 天美影院School of Medicine, and Tatiana Toro, the Craig McKibben and Sarah Merner Professor of Mathematics, are also among the 276 artists, scholars, scientists, and leaders in the public, non-profit and private sectors who were announced as new fellows Thursday.
