Nancy 鈥淩usty鈥 Barcelo, vice president for minority affairs, has been presented with the Ohtli award by the government of Mexico.

This is the highest recognition awarded by Mexico to those individuals who heighten the quality of life of Mexicans living abroad.

The award was presented Feb. 25 in ceremonies at Town Hall in Seattle.

According to the Mexican consulate of Seattle, Ohtli means 鈥渢he path鈥 in the Nahuatl language. Aztec manuscripts include marked footprints signifying the paths that men and women were directed to follow. Even today, Nahuatl people say 鈥淐ualli ohtli鈥 to say farewell, which means, 鈥淢ay you go on the right path.鈥

The Ohtli award was created by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs to recognize those whose work, research and academic or cultural services have contributed significantly to the furtherance of U.S.-Mexico relations, and whose work contributes to the well-being of the community of people of Mexican origin living in the United States.
