Research Awards

The Global Innovation Fund provides seed funding toÌýinitiateÌýinnovativeÌýresearch collaborations that connect different disciplines and continents. These awards help teams launch new projects, build international networks, andÌýlayÌýthe groundwork for future large-scale research initiatives.

Tier 1 ÌìÃÀÓ°ÔºResearch Award: Up to $5,000 for emerging cross-disciplinary, cross-continent research initiatives.

Tier 2 ÌìÃÀÓ°ÔºResearch Award: Up to $15,000 for established partnerships or projects with significant impact potential.

Tier 3 Partnership Awards: Up to $20,000 through several partner institutions including:

  • Aalto University
  • University of Helsinki
  • Tohoku University
  • The University of Manchester
  • The University of Sheffield

Matching funding up to $20,000.

Research Awards

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Research Applications, at any international locations, thatÌýdemonstrateÌýconsideration for the following will be given priority:Ìý

  • Cross-disciplinary collaborationÌý
  • Longevity of the program/projectÌý
  • Bi-directional relationships withÌýanyÌýglobal partnersÌýÌýÌý

The GIF Awards cannot support long-term projects. It is a seed fund with the expectation that the research team will apply forÌýadditionalÌýfunding to support a long-term project.Ìý

This call invites proposals for partnership development activities that strengthen collaboration between the ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôº (UW) and our partner universities:

Eligibility

  • Proposals must include participants from both ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºand one of the partner institutions listed above.
  • Applications are welcome from all research areas.

Funding Details

  • Each selected project may receiveÌýup to $10,000 from the Global Innovation Fund (GIF)Ìýat UW.
  • The partner university willÌýmatch the same amount, providing up to an additionalÌý$10,000Ìýto its participating faculty or researchers.
  • Total maximum project funding:Ìý$20,000.
  • Funds are intended to support activities that initiate or deepen collaboration, such as workshops and joint research.

Application Process

    • TheÌýÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºfaculty memberÌýserves as theÌýPrincipal Investigator (PI)Ìýand submits the application through theÌýGIF Terra Dotta platform.
    • No separate applicationÌýis required through the partner university.

Proposal Requirements
Applications should clearly demonstrate how the proposed activity will:

  • Build on areas of mutual interest and complementary strengths.
  • Provide a foundation for long-term, large-scale collaboration between ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºand the partner institution.
  • Support future joint research initiatives and potential applications for external research funding.

For Tier 1 ÌìÃÀÓ°ÔºResearch Awards:ÌýÌý

  • Early-career ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºfaculty members, research scientists, and non-faculty researchers from the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell campuses, are encouraged to apply. Graduate students, including PhD students, and post docs, are not eligible to apply; however, their involvement in the project’s delivery, such as serving as research assistants or interns, is encouraged. Ìý
  • Tier 1 awards are intended for applicants who are in theÌýearly stagesÌýof a research project or those seeking to expand their research globally.Ìý

For Tier 2 ÌìÃÀÓ°ÔºResearch AwardsÌý

  • ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºfaculty members, research scientists, and non-faculty researchers from the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell campuses, are encouraged to apply. Graduate students, including PhD students, and post docs, are not eligible to apply; however, their involvement in the project’s delivery, such as serving as research assistants or interns, is encouraged. Ìý

For Partnership Awards

  • Who can apply: ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºfaculty members and research scientists from the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell campuses are eligible and encouraged to apply.
  • Who cannot apply: Graduate students, including PhD students, and post docs, are not eligible to apply as principal applicants.
  • Student involvement: Graduate students may participate in the project’s delivery, such as serving as research assistants or interns.
  • Collaboration requirement: All ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôºapplications must include a collaborator from one of the partner universities.

  • Proof of concept with clear outcomesÌý

  • Development and submission of a collaborative proposal for external fundingÌý
  • Development and submission of a collaborative scholarly publication, monograph, or exhibition of research or creative workÌý
  • Development of new collaborative curricular programs (degree programs, courses, faculty exchanges)Ìý

Reimbursement due No later than March 31, 2027
Post-award reports due No later than March 31, 2027
Unused funds returned to OGA No later than March 31, 2027

All funded projects must submit a post-award report to the MyGlobal platform at the end of the award use period.

Failure toÌýsubmitÌýthe final report and budget on time will cause exclusion from future GIF applications.Ìý
